This classic living nature lore book by Joseph Wharton Lippincott, first published in 1921, is a story for young readers about Gray Squirrel and his unlikely friendship with man.
Part heartwarming story, part plea for conservation and animal protection, the story of Gray Squirrel follows his life from the time he fell from his mother's reach as a baby, to be picked up by Old George, to becoming "King Squirrel" and starting a family of his own. He finds himself in many adventures and just as many hardships along the way (many at the hands of men).
Real knowledge of squirrels and other woods folk are woven throughout the story, making this a great reading selection for homeschool natural history lessons, or for children who love real animals.

Recommended age range: 6-12 years old.

Content Considerations
  • There is one use of the word "colored" used in the beginning of the book. Excerpt -
"Old George, who lived in a little brown shanty just across the road, had seen squirrels there nearly every day of his life, and he was now so old that he could scarcely remember the time when as a little colored boy he first took the job of tending the Briggs Farm cows."
  • "Love making" is mentioned during mating season. Excerpt -
"Then suddenly Spring was in the air and first the killers began to think of mates and next the little grass and nut eaters forgot their old troubles for a time in the excitement of love making."
  • Gray Squirrel's mother (and others) are killed during hunting season. Excerpt -
"His mother was gone. Poor little squirrel! She had been shot in the high nest of leaves which had sheltered her and her last family. No gunner, however, had laid bloody hands on her. Mortally wounded she had clung to her home until the darkness came and found her there, dead, but still free."
  • *Spoiler* Old George dies in the end. Excerpt -
"There had been a gust of rain with one terrific flash of lightning. This had struck the Oak, and torn away the roof over Old George’s little cot where he had rested so happily and now slept so soundly that he would never more awake."
